What can I expect?
Furniture will need to be moved out. Base shoe also called quarter-round will need to be removed. The home owner can do this themselves. Timeless flooring can provide this service for a fee as well.
Humidity levels will need to be properly maintained before, during and after installation.
Indoor humidity should be a constant 40% year-round. In winter you may need to run a humidifier on your central heating system. In the summer, run a dehumidifier. We recommend an Accurite Hydrometer to keep an eye on humidity levels.
Your hot water heater may need to be turned off. You will be responsible for re-igniting it.
Dust. There is no such thing as dust free. We do our best to capture the majority of the dust however there is no such thing as dust free sanding.
A night or more away from your home. During sanding you will be able to stay in your home and be only slightly inconvenienced. Depending on the type of stain or finish you choose, it is likely you will need to be out of your home when we stain and/or coat due to the smell of the product.
How long does it take?
After you have chosen your wood and it has been delivered, it will need to acclimate.
Acclimate means become accustomed to a new climate or to new conditions. This is essential to installing your hardwood floors. The longer it has to acclimate the better. We will test the moisture levels to monitor the acclimation. Two weeks is a good guideline.
Typically we install raw wood, then sand and refinish it on site. Actual length of time will depend on the square footage being installed and refinished. Our average new install and refinish takes approximately 7-10 working days.
How long before I can walk, and put furniture and rugs down on my newly installed and refinished hardwood floors?
Typically the floor needs a twenty-four hour dry time and a two-week cure time.
While you can walk in socks after twenty-four hours you CANNOT drag, slide or shove any boxes, furniture, appliances, etc. across the floors. During the two-week curing period they are very susceptible to scratching.
We also recommend protectors on all movable furniture. We carry safe-glides, tap in protectors for wooden legged furniture.
How long will a typical solid hardwood floor last after a new install and refinish?
This depends on use and wood type. Heavily trafficked floors need more frequent maintenance.
